Will Our New President Eliminate Medicare and Medicaid? Elder Law Attorney, Woodstock, Georgia

Dr. Ben Carson, former neurosurgeon and current GOP frontrunner in Iowa, says that he would abolish Medicare.  Medicare is the current health care insurance for people in the U.S. that are 65 and above.  There are currently 49 million seniors that would be impacted by this decision.  Carson suggests funding a “cradle-to-grave” savings account in which each person would be given $2000 per year in government contributions.

Employees have been paying into the Medicare system for years so they would have health insurance when they retire.  What would happen to those contributions?  Health insurance may be available to some younger people for $2000 per year, but the cost for seniors would likely be much more expensive.  Many individuals in their mid 50s that do not have insurance through their employers are paying $8000 per year for health insurance.

Despite his plan to eliminate Medicare and Medicaid, Carson is very popular among senior voters.  In Iowa, Carson has about 25% of the senior votes.

Should the Medicare and Medicaid programs come to an end?  What do you think?
