Estates Can Strengthen Families, Elder Law Attorney, Woodstock, GA

When a loved one passes away, the process of administrating an estate can be extremely trying on the family. Some families fall apart due to the fighting that occurs. However, it does not have to be that way. Administrating an estate can bring families closer together.

One of the biggest tests that families can experience, is when a loved one passes away and the estate needs to be settled. It is a difficult time that can see the family torn apart or brought even closer together.

Some families fight with each other over the proceeds of the estate and who gets what. Those are usually the families whose stories are written about.

The families who come together to administer an estate, do not often make the news. It is important to understand what makes them different.

It all starts with communication.

Family members need to know what is going on with the estate administration to alleviate any individual’s fears that he or she might be getting the short end of the stick. Communication that takes place in person between family members, is best so families can see each other face-to-face and build a consensus about how to deal with any potentially large problems.

Family meetings are also great for remembering and celebrating the loved one who passed away. That helps families keep in mind what they have in common, instead of what their differences are.

If estate administration is done well, then the family will grow closer and have stronger bonds. However, it takes a lot of work and is never an easy process.

“On the threshold of retirement, we finally decided to quit thinking we could self-prepare the requisite documents. We had previously had only a very simple will. We needed the necessary legal (including updated will) & health care docs but didn’t want to deal with the time & complication of legalese. Cindy made the process relatively painless. She took the time to explain and answer questions without trying to upsell services. We were done in 2 meetings plus the reading of emailed drafts. In addition to preparing the documents, Nelson Eldercare will be there when our adult children need advice on executing the plans we’ve put in place. So glad it’s behind us and would recommend Cindy and her helpful staff.”
